Turtle Walk #12

We were thinking we might get lucky again this morning and find more turtle activity.  What we did find, was a lot of no-see-um activity because there was hardly any breeze when we started.

You never know if you will see a turtle; sometimes we get lucky!

Footprints in a sea turtle nest! :(

Footprints on another nest. :(

Clouds got brighter and brighter pink as the sun came up.

Yes that's me, a mere shadow of myself. :)

We had no turtle activity, not even a false crawl.

Sanibel East- 35 nests, 81 false crawls, 3 hatches
Sanibel West- 230 nests, 334 false crawls, 32 hatches

It saddens and upsets me to see the footprints on the turtle nests. Also, the beach chairs, etc. left on the beach. Last week while I was there I decided there is much less respect for the beach than in the past. It seemed there was more litter and more abandoned beach equipment. I talked to several people that didn't have a clue about turtles or live versus dead shells. I think there needs to be informative signs at all the paths to the beach. I want to think it is ignorance, not apathy.

Funny story - I was walking on the beach and nearby was a man and woman also walking and shelling. She had a drink in a glass and he had a can of beer. As I bent over to check a shell, I heard her say to the man, "Where is your can?". He said, "I filled it with water and threw it in the ocean". I almost got a whiplash as I turned to tell him off. I didn't get a chance to do this. His wife was doing better than I could have done! He took it for a few seconds and then with a big grin he reached in his shorts pocket and pulled out the can . . .
